Carbon Fiber Makes Lightweight Sony VAIO X Netbook

September 2nd, 2009 David No comments

Sony announced the new Sony VAIO X series netbook at IFA 2009 today. Many bloggers like to call this Sony VAIO X ultraportable device a notebook. But, in my opinion, I would rather call this a netbook. Most surprisingly, this Sony VAIO X netbook is made of carbon fiber which is typically used to make high strength but low weight composite materials.

This netbook uses 11.2″ display and weighs 1.5 lbs only! Rumors are out that this Sony VAIO X will be using Intel Atom Processor. But it would be also possible that this netbook might be using the ULV processor which is typically used for ultra-thin designed notebooks (like the MSI X600). The thickness of this netbook would be only 0.5 inch.

Google Chrome Browser Default at Sony VAIO Computers

September 1st, 2009 David No comments

google chromeGoogle announced today that Google has worked out a deal with Sony to put Google Chrome browser in Sony VAIO computers. It is an important step that Google did to promote the Chrome browser to reach more consumers. Customers will be receiving the computers that installed with Google Chrome soon, although Google Chrome is free through Google.

This is the first deal that Google made to reach more internet users with PC makers. I believe Google will contact more PC makers in the near future to promote the Chrome browser. Internet Explorer take about 68% of browser market and Google Chrome only occupy about 2%. The future of Google’s Chrome is bright but most internet users actually do not care or even know much about browser. And they do not know how to evaluate a browser. Since essentially all the PCs are installed Windows OS, internet explorer is the only choice for most users. As Google’s move to pre-install Google Chrome in the PCs, the competition between Windows, Google and Firefox will become more intense.

Sources also indicate that Google is working with other partners to bundle Google Chrome with other softwares or programs. A nice step Google!

Sony A850 DSLR Camera Preorder at Amazon.com

September 1st, 2009 David No comments

DSLRA850Sony just launched the new Sony A850 DSLR camera with a 24.6-megapixel Exmor CMOS image sensor. This device is now available for preorder at amazon.com. This A850 model equipped with the same sensor that used in Sony’s A900 DSLR camera but it is much cheaper ($2000 vs. $2700). There is no much difference between the A900 and A850 models. The only difference I can tell so far is the 100% viewfinder coverage in A900 vs. 98% in A850 which I do not think it is not worth $700 buck!

Some features of the new A850 camera:

  • 24.6MP, 35mm full frame Exmor™ CMOS image sensor
  • SteadyShot INSIDE™ image stabilization
  • Dual BIONZ processors for up to fast 3fps performance
  • 3.0″ display (921K pixels), 9-point AF system w/ additional 10-point assist
  • Anti-Dust system

The question remains is why people want to buy the A900 with a $700 gap between two similar products?

Other Sony A series DSLR cameras are: Sony A230, Sony A330, Sony A380, Sony A500, Sony A550, and Sony A700.

Sony VAIO W Netbook

August 30th, 2009 David No comments

sony vaio wSony VAIO W is the first official netbook launched in July 2009. Priced at $499, it is really a nice netbook. But it comes with only standard netbook features which you can find on MSI, ASUS, or Acer netbooks. Why would you want to pay more money for a similar product?

Here are two things I can imagine:

1. Intel Atom N280 processor

2. 10.1″ 1366×768 resolution LCD screen

Other than that, I can not find any reason to buy a $500 machine which can be replaced by a $300 one.
